UPDATE on National Volunteer Care Corps

In the fall it was announced that the Administration for Community Living awarded a five year cooperative agreement with the Oasis Institute to establish a National Volunteer Care Corps. This is in partnership with the Caregiver Action Network, the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging and the Altarum Institute. A new national program will foster innovative models in which local volunteers assist caregivers, older adults and persons with disabilities with non-medical care in their own homes in order to maintain independence.

Community Care Corps will be posting a request for proposal (RFP) on January 15, 2020. These grants are open to any organization that meets the guidelines. Villages are primed to take advantage of this great opportunity. Village to Village Network has actively been in meetings this past year with the Administration on Community Living. We are excited at the prospect submitting an RFP and working to expand our grassroots volunteer model for aging in community to underserved areas throughout the country.

2020 Census: How Your Village Can Help

The 2020 Census counts every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. Countdown, 81 days until April 1, 2020.

The count is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency. The 2020 Census counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire—online, by phone, or by mail. This will mark the first time that you will be able to respond to the census online.

As required by the Census Act, the U.S. Census Bureau submitted a list of questions to Congress on March 29, 2018. Based on those questions, the 2020 Census will ask:

  • How many people are living or staying at your home on April 1, 2020. This will help us count the entire U.S. population and ensure that we count people according to where they live on Census Day.
  • Whether the home is owned or rented. This will help us produce statistics about homeownership and renting. The rates of homeownership serve as one indicator of the nation's economy. They also help in administering housing programs and informing planning decisions.
  • About the sex of each person in your home. This allows us to create statistics about males and females, which can be used in planning and funding government programs. This data can also be used to enforce laws, regulations, and policies against discrimination.
  • About the age of each person in your home. The U.S. Census Bureau creates statistics to better understand the size and characteristics of different age groups. Agencies use this data to plan and fund government programs that support specific age groups, including children and older adults.
  • About the race of each person in your home. This allows us to create statistics about race and to provide other statistics by racial groups. This data helps federal agencies monitor compliance with anti-discrimination provisions, such as those in the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act.
  • About whether a person in your home is of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin. These responses help create statistics about this ethnic group. This is needed by federal agencies to monitor compliance with anti-discrimination provisions, such as those in the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act.
  • About the relationship of each person in your home. This allows the Census Bureau to create estimates about families, households, and other groups. Relationship data is used in planning and funding government programs that support families, including people raising children alone.

Governments, businesses, communities, and nonprofits all rely on the data that these questions produce to make critical decisions.

The Census Will Never Ask Certain Questions

During the 2020 Census, the Census Bureau will never ask you for:

  • Your Social Security number.
  • Money or donations.
  • Anything on behalf of a political party.
  • Your bank or credit card account numbers.

If someone claiming to be from the Census Bureau contacts you via email or phone and asks you for one of these things, it's a scam, and you should not cooperate.

What Happens to Your Answers?

Your personal information is kept confidential. The Census Bureau is bound by federal law to protect your information, and your data is used only for statistical purposes.

Your responses are compiled with information from other homes to produce statistics, which never identify your home or any person in your home. Learn more about how we protect your information.

Your response matters.

Health clinics. Fire departments. Schools. Even roads and highways. The census can shape many different aspects of your community.

  • Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year.
  • The results determine how many seats in Congress each state gets.
  • It's mandated by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2: The U.S. has counted its population every 10 years since 1790.

 Villages Can Support Their Communities!

Census results are used to determine your representation in Congress, and they help inform how billions of dollars are distributed for hospitals, schools, roads, and more. Help ensure that everyone in your community is counted in the 2020 Census.

2020 Census Jobs

The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting to fill hundreds of thousands of temporary positions across the country to assist with the 2020 Census count. Click the link below to learn more about Census Jobs!

LOWLINC Uses McMurty Award Funds to Advance Community Health & Wellness
LOWLINC, a Village serving seniors at Lake of the Woods (LOW), Locust Grove, Virginia, announced that it has used the funds from its $5,000 McMurtry Award to support a variety of health and wellness-related items or programs that benefit Lake of the Woods and Orange County residents.

The award funds were used as follows:
  • 12 Guardian Alert 911 Monitors, donated to Orange County TRIAD
  • Rollator walkers and knee scooters, donated to LOW Lions Club
  • Umbrellas and a bike rack for the new Fitness/Pool, donated to Lake of the Woods Association
  • Bleeding control kits, donated to Lake of the Woods Association
  • Support for free Stop the Bleed and CPR Workshops for the LOW community
  • Two (2) CO Monitors, donated to LOW Fire & Rescue
  • Geriatric EMT Training Course, donated to LOW Fire & Rescue
  • Honorarium for volunteer exercise leader
  • Workbooks for LOWLINC-sponsored Dementia Friends learning sessions

“We are most grateful to the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation for this award,” said LOWLINC Board Chair Carolyn Rourke. “Our board solicited input from the community on how to use the funds, and based on that feedback and our discussions, we determined it would be most appropriate to use the award to support projects or programs that advance community health and wellness. We consulted with Orange County TRIAD, LOW Lions Club, LOW Fire & Rescue, and Lake of the Woods Association to explore their needs for health and wellness-related items or programs that might benefit from our support. We appreciate the opportunity to impact community health and wellness with funds from the McMurtry award, and equally important, we are pleased to be developing an on-going relationship with Mary Washington Healthcare that will benefit the community for years to come.”

The Mary Washington Hospital Foundation offers two Lawrence and Martha McMurtry Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Community Health and Wellness awards annually, one to an individual and the other to a nonprofit organization. LOWLINC received the award for a nonprofit organization in December 2018. The awards “recognize efforts to increase access, improve quality, and foster innovation in providing health and wellness services for the ‘medically underserved,’ in the region served by Mary Washington Hospital.”

MORE INFORMATION ON BOLD:

Why does Bold focus on exercise for balance and fall prevention?

1 in 3 adults over 65 fall every year in the US, resulting in over $50B in direct health costs. Over 25% of Villages using RunMyVillage have implemented the Volunteer Self-Signup (VSS) module…with a growing number of Villages successfully using it.  VSS allows your volunteers to assign themselves for services requested by members. Many villages are now comfortable allowing certain types of services to be self-selected by certain volunteers, without the village office staff and “call manager” volunteers being involved.

The VSS module allows volunteers to go online at any time and consult their own schedules in selecting when to choose a service.  They can choose the type of service and the member who needs help. Because volunteers say they like to use it, VSS aids both as a volunteer recruiting point and in volunteer retention.

Many Villages have looked at VSS over the last few years, but have not quite been ready.  2020 might be time to look again (or consider VSS for the first time).  With the many 2019 enhancements, VSS is more attractive than ever.  Some Villages have found that more than half of the VSS signups occur when the Village office is closed.

The January 16 User Talk is for you to understand better how your Village would benefit from VSS and to learn more about how VSS would actually operate in your environment.  VSS is an extra-cost module from RMV; there is a one-time fee of $600 to implement it.

Please invite anyone from your Village who you think will be interested in learning about VSS and its benefits to the Village and to your volunteers.

These monthly talks are designed to help Villages use RunMyVillage more effectively.  Each month has a different topic.  The intended audience always includes the technology community within your Village; in addition, others in the Village may be invited based on the planned topic.  Each of the User Talks has time for Villages to ask RunMyVillage-related questions to RMV and to other Villages. Examples of what we plan for these talks: RMV new release updates and discussions, results of surveys of desired enhancements to RMV, discussion of best practices and common issues particularly where Villages use RMV is different ways, and orientations for new Villages.   If you have ideas for topics, email us at RMVusers@vtvnetwork.org

February 13, 2020
2 PM ET/ 1 PM CT/ 12 PM MT/ 11 AM PT
All Village to Village Network Members are invited to join us on a monthly call to talk about the important topic of supporting our most frail members. As the society ages, it is inevitable that our membership will age as well, so whether your Village is currently serving frail members or preparing to serve them, we will use this monthly call to unpack this complicated programming consideration.

Katie Garber or Samantha Schiffman will lead the call which will normally occur the 2nd Thursday of each month at 2pm Eastern. Topics open to discussion include, but are not limited to: developing a volunteer-based care coordination system, creating healthy boundaries for member service delivery, setting realistic expectations for members and their families, coordinating with local community resources, when to make a referral to Adult Protective Services, etc. Please come with your questions and we will try to address as much as we can in the hour we have.

Note: If you have any questions about Frail Members, please contact vtv@vtvnetwork.org and NOT Capitol Hill Village.  All questions or comments should please be directed to the Network.
